Worth Knowing
Sourced history and curiosities from this county. More at our Michigan facts page.
It is a kettle, a bowl shaped hollow left when a buried block of glacial ice melted out thousands of years ago. It drops roughly 100 feet below the surrounding forest floor and, unlike most kettles nearby, it never filled with water. Source
Irving Delos Charlton donated 210 acres to the county in 1936 along with thousands of artifacts he had collected. The historic village on Thornapple Lake near Hastings was assembled starting in 1969 to portray a typical turn of the century rural Michigan town. Source
Barry-Roubaix, a gravel road race started in 2009 by Rick and Cathy Plite after they discovered the county's back roads on a group ride. Based in Hastings since 2013, it now draws thousands of riders from dozens of states and several countries. Source
Still debated Apparently not. The usual account credits Garaudus Nash, a chief engineer for the Grand River Valley Railroad who was surveying the line from Jackson to Grand Rapids in 1866 and suggested the community be named for him. It was incorporated as a village in 1869. Source
Where This Comes From
Population, income, home value, ownership, housing age and commute times come from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey five-year estimates. New construction comes from the Census Building Permits Survey. Sold and active listing figures are Legacy's own read of the MLS for July 2026 closings, Legacy's read as of early August 2026. Local facts carry their own source link.
We do not publish crime statistics or school ratings. Those figures are reported by agency and district rather than by community, they lag by a year or more, and ranking communities on them is not something a brokerage should be doing. For public safety, the FBI publishes reported offenses by the agency that actually covers each community, and for schools the State of Michigan publishes district data directly. Both are linked below so you can read the primary source yourself.
This page is compiled from public government sources for general information only. Every community we serve is presented using the same template and the same sources.
