In Fremont, where Dorothy Gerber was hand straining peas for her infant daughter in 1927 and suggested the family's Fremont Canning Company do the work instead. The first Gerber strained foods reached grocery shelves in 1928. Source
Yes. The company ran a 1928 contest for a face to put on its labels and chose a charcoal sketch by artist Dorothy Hope Smith. The infant who modeled for it, Ann Turner Cook, grew up to be an English teacher and mystery novelist. Source
The Croton hydroelectric plant went into full service in September 1907 with a transmission line carrying power roughly fifty miles to Grand Rapids at the highest voltage then in use anywhere. Visiting engineers came from around the world to see it, and the plant still generates today. Source
Yes, and it is in Newaygo County. Loda Lake National Wildflower Sanctuary was established in 1949 with the Michigan Garden Clubs and protects more than 230 wildflower species across a spring fed lake, a bog, oak woods and an old farm. Source
